Around the year 1206, Francisco dreamt than the Lord ordered him to return to Espoleto of Asís, and to be there until his will was revealed. Once he arrived, Francisco began to pray intensely to be able to know the divine will. In order to accomplish his prayers, principally he headed for the little island of Saint Damian, that was out of the limits of the city. There he found an ancient crucifix. This one day talked to Francisco and said to him: «Francisco, go, repair my house, as you see, everything falls to the ground ».

Shaky and surprised, he answered : I will do it of very good desire, Lord. Next he immersed in thought and was left like snatched, in between the empty church. Such was the joy and so much the clarity that heu received with those words, that seemed to him that the crucified Christ was the one who had spoken.

Description of San Damián's crucifix

The crucifix that spoke to Francisco is today one of most well-known and reproduced of the world. Is a Romanesque-bizantine icon from c. XII, author umbro not known and clear Syrian-Eastern influence. It is of wood of walnut covered with one coarse fabric, on which they painted with alive colors the figures of Christ and other personages of the Passion. Without the pedestal, it measures 2,10 meters height per 1,30 wide.
